Digitalisation in Music Education
Empirical studies on perspectives, practices and needs.
Special Edition 2025 of the Bulletin of empirical music education research (b:em)
Editors of the Special Edition: Thade Buchborn (Guest Editor), Valerie Krupp, Lina Oravec
Since 2023, the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has been funding around 200 transnational educational research and development projects, withing which “evidence-based further and continuing education, materials and concepts for school and lesson development in a culture of digitality” (www.lernen.digital) are being developed. In several directly related research networks and beyond, empirical studies have emerged that examine from different perspectives the meaning and significance of digital technologies and digital and post-digital music practices within the brad field of music education.
The Journal Bulletin of empirical music education research is dedicating a special issue to this topic in 2025. We invite you to submit contributions for this special issue by March 15, 2025 (see below for complete schedule). The expected publication date is July/August 2025.
Background and objectives
Increasing digitalization and technological developments are also having a growing impact on music education. Of particular interest to music education are questions about how music education practices are changing, which digital competencies learners should acquire and which competencies teachers need in order to facilitate them. At the same time, attitudes towards the use of digital media play an important role with regard to teachers' engagement with digital technologies and their use in music lessons. The recently published ICILS study points to subject and process-related professional development potential with regard to the professionalization of teachers both during their studies and in further education and training (Eickelmann et al., 2024). In addition, German teachers participate less frequently than average in further training on topics related to the digitalization of teaching and learning compared to other countries (ibid., p. 42).
Empirical studies are necessary for the development of appropriate teacher training and further education programs. This special edition aims to bring together the current state of research and present new findings on the needs, challenges and perspectives of teachers related to the possible use of digital media in music lessons.
Submitted contributions could include (but are not limited to) the following topics:
- Survey and analysis of the professional development needs of music teachers regarding the use of digital media and digital music practices
- Attitudes of teachers and learners regarding the use of digital media
- Comparison of needs and perspectives in different educational contexts (e.g. primary, secondary, different types of schools, music schools) and subjects
- Specific challenges and opportunities for planning and implementing further professional development
- Development and testing of concepts for digitally supported teaching and learning environments in music lessons and in music teacher training
- Evaluation and impact studies
