About the Journal
Bulletin of empirical music education Research (b:em) offers an international platform for the publication of high-quality empirical studies, meta-studies and methodological reflections from the entire field of music education research. The international open access journal with double-blind peer review is free of charge for both authors and readers. The journal presents and discusses findings and analyses of music education research in schools and classrooms as well as contributions dedicated to non-formal or informal music-making and teaching/learning contexts. Submissions from related disciplines are also welcome, provided their relevance to music education is clear.
Another focus is on articles with a methodological or methodological emphasis. They are a valuable contribution to the further development of empirical music education. In addition, each issue contains reviews and conference reports with the aim of promoting internal and international dialog and supporting academic communication. This is particularly important to us in continental Europe.
The journal is edited by Michael Göllner (mdw University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna), Valerie Krupp (Mainz School of Music), Andreas Lehmann-Wermser (Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media) and Lina Oravec (University of Koblenz) and supported by a scientific advisory board. This is made up of empirical research colleagues from all over Europe. From 2009-2012, b:em was supported by the German Research Foundation. Since 2024, the publication has been published by mdwPress and hosted by SLUB.
