Teacher education offers formal learning opportunities for preservice teachers, but they also learn from informal learning opportunities. This study describes the teaching-type experiences of music teacher education students and the meaning the students give to these experiences. All 135 participants from four different universities in North Rhine-Westphalia gained pedagogical experiences before their long-term internship taking place in the Master of Education. The students describe a lot of very different, often extensive activities, many of them taking place in the field of music. They believe that they have acquired different competencies and that these will be useful during their internship. In comparison with teacher education students in other subjects, the experiences of preservice music teachers are more often related to their subject and are more diverse.
