Abstract

Practice is essential when playing a musical instrument. Successful practice sessions are characterized by the use of various learning strategies. In the current study, the use of learning strategies during an individual practice session was analyzed in order to measure self-regulated learning behavior. We conducted Video-Stimulated Recall interviews with six musicians of different age and experience with their instrument. A qualitative content analysis of the transcribed interviews showed a variety of strategies used by the musicians during the practice session. Both between the learning strategies and depending on age and educational institution, differences in the frequency of strategy use were found. These findings suggest a connection between the use of strategies and the level of expertise.
